John Returns from The Best Referee School in the World !

Being selected for UEFA’s Centre of Refereeing Excellence is without doubt the highlight of my career so far

along with assistants Gavin Harris (Angus and Perthshire) and David McGeachie (FIFE) – we set off for Geneva

with real excitement and enthusiasm for what lay in store.

The ten days that followed were the most thought-provoking, inspiring and enjoyable since I decided to take up refereeing

over 14 years ago. To represent Scotland, and indeed Lanarkshire, at a UEFA run course is a fantastic honour

and one I will never forget.

The course leader was David Elleray, a member of UEFA’s Referee Committee, and a well-known referee to all of us

who have followed English football over the years. From the start, he set out the expectations and made it clear that

only being excellent would meet with UEFA’s approval.

My coach during the course, and for the next six months until we return, is Peter Jones, a former FIFA referee from England.

He is a real football man and we had some great discussions about football in Scotland, he has an enthusiasm for football

that you can’t help admire and we hit it off straight away.

Also on the course were teams of officials from all over Europe including Slovenia, Switzerland, Bosnia, Cyprus, Spain, Azerbaijan

and also a team visiting from the Seychelles.

It was a fantastic experience to mix with them and find out more about refereeing in other countries.

Coaching topics during the stay looked at Serious Foul Play, Confrontation, Positioning and Body Language.

It was an incredible learning experience to be taken through each of the topics in fine detail and the information we were given

can only help me to improve as a referee.

Hopefully it is something I can bring back to my Lanarkshire colleagues and I look forward to telling you more at our monthly meetings.

Training during the course was straightforward enough, Jim Hardie’s training

has us more than prepared for tough tests of our stamina and I felt very comfortable in all of the sessions.

There were some interesting techniques and training drills though and again will help me to get better – or at least try!

The practical sessions were all filmed and we had the opportunity to see our decisions put under real scrutiny which was of real benefit.

I think I probably learned more in that short period of time than I have done in the last few years.

Our match itself took place in the capital of Berne, in the Swiss third level and was also a brilliant experience.

My first international match as a referee is something I will always look back on fondly.

The banter among the rest of the guys was brilliant and really made the experience all the more enjoyable.

We met friends from the refereeing family that we will forever keep in contact with and I look forward

to getting back together with them for the consolidation course in April.

A welcome visitor at the end of the course was Hugh Dallas, it was fantastic to meet up with him again

and it was great to see the reaction of our colleagues who were asking for photos with him.

He really is a fantastic ambassador for Scottish refereeing.

I would be delighted if I can achieve a fraction of what he did during his career.

I won’t mention the fact he was less than complimentary about our performance of Caledonia at the closing ceremony!

UEFA Referee Committee member and former top French referee Marc Batta visited us on the last day

and told us we were attending ‘the best referee school in the world’.

He spoke to us for just a few minutes but we were left in no doubt as to how fortunate we were to be given this opportunity.

And with that, I will leave it for now. With the winter months drawing ever closer

the temptation to sit at home rather than training also creeps up on you.

I hope that this short insight is as much an inspiration to the members as it is for me.

Particularly for the younger guys - Alan Mulvanny attended the course last year and this year

I was lucky enough to be picked to go along.

Who’s up for the challenge of completing the hatrick and flying the flag for Lanarkshire ??

European Trip For Lanarkshire Two

John Beaton and Stephen Mitchell (4th official and assistant referee) have just returned from Croatia after officiating in the town of Varazdin in the UEFA Europa League. The 2nd qualifying round, 2nd leg match, between NK Varazdin and FC Iskra-Stal (Moldova) was John's first European trip, while Stephen was clocking up his 2nd trip after a match in Odense, Denmark last year.

Referee for the match was Steven McLean of Glasgow, with Willie Conquer of Fife completing the team of officials. The match proved to be an entertaining encounter with the home side eventually winning 3-1 on the night, completing a 4-2 aggregrate win, following a 1-1 draw in Moldova. The match is certain to be the first in a series of European appointments for Lanarkshire officials as the Europa League nears the group stages.

Scottish Cup Final Appointment

For George Drummond

I don’t think it has fully sunk in yet after receiving the phone call from Drew Herbertson of the SFA on Thursday morning advising me that I had been appointed to the Scottish Cup Final.

It is the highest accolade any referee can receive to be appointed to their National Cup Final and I am honoured to have received this appointment.

We all have the same dream when we start off refereeing and that is to referee at the highest level possible and I am no different.

Having started off refereeing at grass routes football and progressing through the ranks, I think if anyone would have told me back then that I would be appointed to the Scottish Cup Final I would have had them sectioned.
I have been very fortunate operating at the highest level both domestically and in Europe and to be appointed to what will be my 4th Cup Final it is a great honour.

Having been appointed to the Celtic v Rangers CIS Cup Final in March this year I never for a minute though I would receive the Scottish Cup Final in the same year.
Without the support of the refereeing family it would not have been possible for me to get where I am today and I’m eternally grateful.

Shark Dive

Shark Dive

Five of our brave (stupid) referees managed to raise an impressive £2,000 for the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice after diving with sharks!. Alan McFadyen, Martin McGuinness, Alan Mulvanny, Stevie Mitchell and Jim McCunnie took part in the event to raise money for the charity.

The guys will present the cheque to the Hospice later this month after completing the challenge at Deep Sea World, North Queensferry.

Organiser Stevie Mitchell said: "It's important we give something back as an association and having looked into a few options I thought this was a good way to kick off. It didn't take me long to get a few volunteers and all of the guys thoroughly enjoyed it.

"We are delighted to have raised so much money and we are looking forward to getting involved in further events in the year ahead to raise even more money for a worthy cause."

Core Update from Mulvanny

What an experience CORE was like being a professional Assistant Referee for 10 days!

There was 7 other referee teams on the course from Jordan, Germany, Greece, Croatia, Russia Finland & Albania and the camaraderie between all the officials was excellent.

The course was very intensive with a full programme each day mixed with presentations from David Elleray & Jaap Ullenberg, training, practical exercises, bicycle runs and even managed to fit in some free time.

On arrival at the course we were met by a physiotherapist who carried out various checks and also a team of 3 doctors who also carried out various medical assessments. This was to make sure that all officials present on the course were in good health.

Each team of officials were allocated a coach ours being former FIFA Official Gerard Perry (Republic of Ireland)he will have a valuable input into much of what we do, not only for this week, but also as part of regular contact during the 6 months until we return to Nyon for the consolidation course late August.

We had several training sessions, including a practical session on “decision making close to the penalty area” which was filmed for analysis.  UEFA arranged for a local football team to create various match scenarios (free kicks/penalty kicks, offside, and mass confrontation) which allowed each trio to work together in order to deal with the incidents which then arose.  Off the park, at UEFA’s HQ, there have been group discussions on what have been identified as some of the key topics for CORE (managing the re-start of play, advantage, co-operation, confrontation, serious foul challenges, body language and positioning)

A main part of the course is actually refereeing a match. We were appointed to a Fourth Division match in France on Saturday evening - Besancon Racing Club v PSG2.  There were 2500 spectators in attendance and it was a great experience for us all. Gerard Perry was certainly pleased with our performances."

Each official has chosen 3 main objectives that they have to improve on for returning to the consolidation course. We have also to keep in close contact with our coach and also John Baptiste who works alongside Werner Helsen as a fitness coach, by sending data on a monthly basis from our polar watches.

It was an excellent but intensive trip but I cannot wait until I return in August.

Venue Change

The Association has moved the venue for the May Members Meeting to the Strathclyde Hilton in Bellshill. This is a change from the normal venue at Dalziel Park. It is anticipated that the Hilton will become the regular venue for our monthly meetings.
