Recruitment

Official football at all levels requires referees. Love them or hate them, without them, football as we know it today would just not exist. The opportunities are there for you to reach the highest level possible, providing you have the dedication and ability.

Train to be a Referee

Whether your objective is to officiate at the highest levels in SPL or SFL matches or just assist local amateur and youth leagues, the opportunities are there for you. SFA Referee Entrance courses are held twice yearly, starting in September and February.

Courses generally  last 7 weeks and focus primarily on the FIFA Laws of the Game and basic refereeing concepts. At the end of the course, candidates sit a formal written "entrance" examination set by the SFA. Currently the pass mark is 80%. This might seem a tad high but it would not do if referees got half of their decisions wrong - would it? After passing the exam, candidates are entitled to become a member of their local referees association.

The training courses are tutored by referees and former referees who have a wealth of experience of all levels of the game.

Once a member of your referees association, you will be encouraged to develop your refereeing skills at a pace which suits your needs and abilities. You will make new friends, learn new skills, be involved in football and be able to keep yourself fitter.

The courses are open to anyone over 16 years of age.
